| Chapter member Jennifer Armstrong Boulden, communications director of the Fort Smith Convention and Visitors Bureau, told how her agency pushed out word of Fort Smith's role as the setting for the movie "True Grit" last December. With almost no budget to spend other than $288 for Rooster Cogburn eye patches and no interest from Paramount Pictures in arranging a screening, the bureau went to the web and promoted True Gritapalooza, a Facebook page that rounded up the public to participate in a video re-enactment of Rooster's showdown with Ned Pepper. ("I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!") About 500 people showed up to say their lines in unison at the re-enactment. The YouTube video took off, Jennifer's coincidental article in Awards Daily about the movie was noticed by news media, mentions began happening worldwide and Paramount eventually took notice and provided some movie paraphernalia to the city. |
